The apparent discrepancy remarked in para. * is thus explained:

In June, 1879, Mr. McLeod was drawing salary at the rate of $960 per annum. In the Estimates for that year it was proposed to pay him at the rate of $1,200 per annum. He did not receive this increase until the approval of the Estimates reached the Colony in September. He then received the arrears and began to count his increase from 12th January, 1879.
