I have laid before the Marquess of Salisbury your letter of the 13th Instant inclosing a copy of a letter from Mr. Larsen, requesting to be informed whether the Caroline Islands have been claimed by any European Power, and whether Her Majesty's Government would eventually protect his interests and those of other British Subjects employed by him in his trade in those Islands.

I am directed by the Marquis of Salisbury to request that you will inform Mr. Larsen that their Lordships will inform the Colonial Office
