Superintendent of the Gardens and Plantations Department, who was instructed to come about it, bringing with him the papers relating to tree planting for statistics on the subject. This was done on the 12th of May, when his report of the 16th of October 1879 was put aside for printing, and he was told to prepare an addendum to it up to date for the despatch in hand.

On this occasion Mr. Ford mentioned Sir Joseph Hooker's wish that his report should be printed.

6. From the Government Printers' Books it appears that Mr. Ford's report of 16th October 1879 was put in type on the 5th of July. It appeared in the Government Gazette of the 31st July, 1880. The addendum prepared by Mr. Ford on the 15th of May, 1880, was printed in the Gazette on the 14th of August, 1880.

The date of the Executive Council meeting to which Mr. Price refers in his letter to Your Lordship was three days before the publication of the Government Gazette. But ordinary care and enquiry have enabled him to ascertain that Mr. Ford's report had been put aside for printing on the 19th of May and that it was actually in type some weeks before the Executive Council meeting to which he referred.
