On the 9th October last, Captain Superintendent submitted the proposal for connecting Houghing with Kaulun by telegraph.
The distance was given as "about 150 yards short of a land mile"; "the greatest depth ten fathoms"; and "the cost of one mile of cable £150, or about $800".
Enclosed was a letter from Mr. Suenson to Acting Deputy Superintendent Horspool informing him that the Government might have about a mile of sea cable at £150 per statute mile.
