I have endeavoured by every means in my power to avoid collision with the Chief Justice and so I sought peace that when he proposed in his letter of September 7th that I should apply for leave of absence with view to retirement and promised to assist in obtaining it, I immediately accepted his proposal and applied personally to His Excellency to withhold my letter (above referred to) with the intention of withdrawing it, if the arrangement could be carried out.

Afterwards I wrote to and obtained replies from the two Acting Deputy Registrars for carrying out the suggestion of the Chief Justice, and it was only when I discovered that the Chief Justice contemplated exacting an apology from me as a condition precedent that I forwarded the two copies of my letters which were necessary for compliance with the official rules.

I now pray His Excellency most earnestly to accord me the enquiry I have asked for, while I am able to conduct it, and I shall there be prepared to meet any countercharge which the Chief Justice may properly prefer against me.

I think I have the honour to be: Sir, Your most obedient servant, A. J. Gibbons Registrar.
