Under these Rules the Committee resumed charge of the Gardens, and upon reorganization, did me the honour of making me its Chairman and Mr. Ford its Secretary.
9. In the course of time, the interest of the Committee in the lesser details of its work having given place entirely to its more pleasing duties of advising on matters of taste, landscape gardening, horticultural exhibitions, etc., the practical portion of its business was relegated to its Chairman and its Secretary. At first, as its organ and at all times in unison with the Committee, I was able to exert some influence in Garden management and tree-planting, but instructions in any shape were intolerable to the Superintendent, that should the day come when I might undertake the afforestation of the island, it would be necessary to clothe the Chairman of the Committee with better-defined powers than he actually possessed.
