192 and we have reason to believe this since that time they have rather diminished than increased. The Anglican Church built only one Cathedral and received $31,000 besides an annual subsidy continuing from the Government to St. John's Cathedral of $800; while we Catholics have built three times the Cathedral, twice St. Joseph's Church, once St. Francis Church besides several chapels, having expended not less than $100,000 and received only $4,500. Lastly, the Anglican Church in Hongkong has always been able to be served by one Clergyman, and the Roman Catholic Church had to maintain at least three Clergymen in Hongkong for the service of the large Catholic population.
All these things considered, we cannot help thinking that whatever may be done towards putting the Church on a fair footing in the future, either by doing away with all allowances or by accumulating them, something should be given to us by way of compensation for the inequalities under which we suffered in the past. We would be contented with comparatively little, and I think I could point out a method of adjusting the balance of account which would be gratefully accepted.
