Public Works Department for six years. It may be pointed out to me that the only money expropriated for him during that time for Roads, Streets was surely sufficient to keep the European Quarter of the town in good season and went condition. Therefore, in preparing the Estimate last year, I inserted a special vote of $4000 for the many neglected chimneys repairing Streets and lanes. Mr. Price seems to have laid out this money admirably, and to the satisfaction of all classes in the Town; but as the work progressed, the necessity for a further outlay became manifest, and I have accordingly taken a vote of $9000 in 1881 for this purpose.
11. As already stated in my Despatch No. 116 of the 20th of August 1880, I have ventured to appropriate the sum of $10,000 for tree planting.
12. Under the head of Miscellaneous Services, I have added $2,000 to the vote for lighting the street lamps. Additional lights will be placed in certain streets and lanes at points suspected by the principal residents and by the Captain Superintendent of Police.
15. The Estimates were passed by the Legislative Council unanimously; nor was there any division in Committee.
