Mr. Keswick's complaint at first
was that my
remarks implied
that he should enquire into the sentences of several hundred prisoners which he said would be
impossible in the time
at his disposal. When the Colonial
"Secretary pointed out that he had
misconceived my meaning,
I had referred to the sentences for prison offences as recorded in the Prison Offence
Book; it then turned out that he had never looked at the Prison Offence Book at
any time. Thereupon
the Colonial Secretary wrote to him that the Governor trusts that without any
further suggestion you would in future "look over the Prison Offence Book, if not
from the time of your
last visit, at least
from the time when the Justice immediately preceding you
had visited the Prison and
examined the Prison
Offence Book.
Assuming that you are prepared
to do the manifest and simple duty implied
in the latter alternative the Governor
will be very happy to retain your
