In addition to this I am disposed to think, from my experience of the West Coast of Africa, that the Climate would not agree with Chinese.

I had a good Gardener at Sierra Leone, and I found a pretty good vegetable garden at Lagos. The "Government" Garden at Elmina, about a mile from the Castle, was in good order when I looked over the settlement in April 1872. I would therefore venture to suggest that instead of importing Gardeners, a few young negroes may be trained if necessary at Madeira where there are remarkably well cultivated vegetable gardens.
