In addition to the above given details

which I consider correct, I wish to point out that the nature of the country, especially in South China, precludes the use of the animals mentioned in the tables within and makes the use of carts or any kind of wheeled vehicles next to impossible. On the other hand, coolies can be engaged at the rates stated by Captain Deane to an unlimited extent. In most parts of South China, there are neither roads nor bridges but bridlepaths and rough substitutes for bridges wherever the country is
