This, after some little difficulty, has been remedied; and the responsibility of seeing that the old state of things does not resur, is shared between the Colonial Surgeon and the Superintendent of the Gaol. Upon the former Officer I have also thrown the responsibility of superintending a small lunatic Asylum. On the whole, I have had
to increase Dr Ayres' work and I
think he is now
fairly entitled to
the whole of the salary
appropriated, in the Civil list, to
his Office.
