CHINESE DEPUTATION TO THE GOVERNOR.

On February the 19th, His Excellency Gov- ernor HENNESSY received a deputation of Chinese merchants at Government House. The follow- ing were present:

Mr. FUNG MING-SHAN said this deputation of Chinese merchants came before His Excellency to present an address on behalf of the community. If His Excellency would allow him he would first read the address in Chinese and afterwards request Dr. ETTEL to read the translation. He then read the address as follows, of which the translation was afterwards read by Dr. EITEL, Chinese Secretary to the Governor :---

"Ever since His Excellency Governor HEN- NESSY assumed office on his arrival here he has been the Protector of our whole community of Hongkong. In the fervent hope that happiness in abundance will ever fill his mind and tran- quility never fail to surround him, we, the whole Chinese community of Hongkong, are moved with delight unspeakable. For we bear in mind that ever since His Excellency the Governor entered upon his appointment, he relaxed, on every audience granted to us on public business,
