A guard of honour į of the 27th (Inniskillings), with the Colours sud the Band, were drawn up on the Fier, and the Police, under the charge of Captaiu-Superin- tendent Deane, lined the road from the Pier to Government House. His Excelloney the Go- vernor, who arrived at a quarter to five o'clock, accompanied by Major Palmer, R.E., A.D.C., stood at the head of the steps to receive the Go- neral, and the heads of the maral, military, and civil services and the members of the Legis- lative Council were also assembled at the head of the pier. His Excelleney the Governor was dressed in plain clothes and wore his C.M.G. star. The uaval and military officers were in undress uniform. Most of the British and fo reign residents, with one or two ladies, and a large number of Chinese were likewise preseut on the pier, which was lined on one side thres or four deen. Along the route up to Queen's-
17 road a large concourse of people had collected, all eager to catch a glimpse of the distinguished į visitors.
At ten minutes to five the Fictoria cane along- side the Murray Pier, and the General with Mr. Holcombe landed. His Excellency the Go- veruor, descending a few steps, said -“ Genorai Grant, welcome to Hougkong." On entering the mat-shed. His Excellency presented General Grant to Major-General Donovan, Sir John i Smale, Chief Justice: Hon. J. Russell, Acting Attorney-General; Run. M, S. Tounochy, Acting Colonial Treasurer: the Right Rev. Bishop Bur-: don, Hon. P. Byris, Hon. J. M. Prine, Surveyor- General; and Mr. Tas King Sing, the Opium Farmer.
The Governor was then introduced by Mr. Hol- combe to Mrs. Grant, Lient. Colonel F. D. Grant, Hou. A. E. Borie, Dr. Keating, and Mr. J. R. Young. His Ixcellency next presented to the! General the Hon. W. Keswick, Mr. Taro Ando, Japanese Consul; Dr. Eitel, Tuspector of Sohoola; Dr. Ayres, Colonial Surgeon; Mr. Ng Choy, Lieutenant-Colonel Hall. R.A., Colonel J. The front of the Vistoria Recreation Club was ; decorated with bunting, and the premises of j | Messrs. McEwen, Frickel & Co. on the Praya were draped with flags. The private residence in Wyndham-street of Mr. W. 11. Moors, of the Queen's-road, was illuminated with Chinese lanterns, and a transparency displaying a well. executed likeness of General Graut on one sido and the American and British flags on the other, Photographs of the scene at Murray Pier were taken by Mr. Afong, as the landing was being offoctod.
