The European Games BRITISH RUNNER WINS
THE 400 METRES IN RECORD TIME
Brussels, Aug. 25.
Derch Pugh, of Britain, today won the final of the 400 Metres Run in the European Championships in 47.3 seconds, his fastest time ever and a new record for the European Games. The previous record, set by A. G. K. Brown in the Paris Games in 1938, was 47.7 seconds. J. Lanis, of France, returning 47.6 seconds for second place, also broke the previous record. L. Wolfbrandt of Sweden was third in 47.9 seconds.
While the Russian women vonsinued. to a clean sweep of the gold medals in the throwing events, the Russian male contingent were blanked out in the De- cathlon, won by Ignace Heinrich, the Frenchman from Alsace, who set a new Euro- pean Games record of 7,315 points. Oern Clausen of Iceland was second with 7,297 points and Aklander of Sweden third with 7,175 points. The Russian athletes bad been considered likely to flush one-two-three in this all-round test.
