A Welcome Gesture
RITAIN'S devi- to ch
of South Korea by nepleting the Hongkong, jak mi son of battalions of infantry inme drafely emme, in one sense, its a enmplete surprise. It was known that the American Ann sador in London had and earne- tuties with Mr Arlee nnd Mr Bevin, urging them the importare of speed, and quite properly arguing that 1,5m trained m put into the field at this critical stage could exert greater influence on the nal result them the clespatek of 13.000 men six months hence, It was not believed that any furilter reduction, even for a short spell, of the forces available to loughong could be contemplated, since the transfer of both the Commando brigade and the Gurkha brigade to Malaya had reduced the defensive strength of the garrison to the minimum consistent with security. Amerten opinion, tom, was unfavourable to any suggestion that troops be drawn from Hongkong, struteglenlly based as it is on the borders of troubled and troublous Chian. However, the British Government tackled the problem and the 1st Bu Middlesex Regiment and the 1st Bn Argyl and Sutherland Highlanders will be the Brat British troops to break Innees with the Communist invaders of South Koren and fight for the freedom of the Repubile. Nane will quarrel with the decision. It will be
applauded. Two battalions resemble rather a token force, although they are likely to be reinforced to divisional strength reasonably soon from the United Kingdom, Australia,
New Zealand and Canndn. Nevertheless, the value of the symbol is high, The Middlesex and the Argylls have a grand record over years of history and the battalions representing their Colours in Hongkong today have superbly demonstrated by their deportment in months of intensive

the gr tude between the forces of treesat and those aftempting to torce Cons and totalitarian slavery over the face vi the world, the United States could not be left in the somewhat invidious position ol ring alone in the ground battle agoinst calculated aggression, the sole represen tative of the United Nations, Circum- stances have not been favourable to targe reinforcements from other countries supporting the United Nations' condem- nation of the Soviet-directed North Korean armles. Britain's heavy commitments in Malaya, Hongkong, the Middle East, Central Europe and elsewhere, the French in Indo-China and #dol, could not facilitate a rush of seasoned troops to Koren. Britain's original intention was the recruitment of volunteer ex-soldiers who would not require months to harden up and learn elementary military tuettes, but the choice now made is sounder. The Royal Navy and British and Australian almen have proved their mettle time and again in the Korea campaign, but the mobilisation of a genuine United Nations "police force" for the ground work and in the shortest possible time was desirable, and the giving of a lend was imperative, morally and practically. Britain has given that lend to others promising effective assistance and these pre certain to be simulated to like action. Hongkong itself will be adequately reinforced within two or three weeks and nothing, therefore, has been lost. Much has been gained in the cause of human liberty.
