Here's a Case Of Suit-Directing Play
By WILLIAM E. McKENNEY
T the Chatham Hotel, New A York City, where the first public Canasta mulch was held, Mr F. Burton Fither, manager of the hotel, and I sat in the press room, discussing nome of the plays of Canasta. He asked me if
I thought conventions might, de- volop in Canasta as they do in bridge.
We were l the middle of a discussion of the famous suit- directing play in bridge when In walked Harry Fishbein, one of the owners of the Mayfair Briditu Club
in New York City. Harry entered into the discussion. Sud- denly he jumped up and cald, "Give me a pencil. I have the most dramatic situation of the suit-directing piny you have ever seen." So between us we built up today's hand.

the South and Weat innis.
The opening rad of the ten of clubs Is won by East with the nee. East cashes the ace of hearts, South plays the king bed West the queen. Now what should Enst shift to? If you have not looked at the South and West hands. I am sure most of you will have East continue with a heart, but he should not.
In the first place the di; card of the queen of hearts by West marks him with the ten. If South held the timetri of hearts, he could not afford to play the king on the first trick, as that might
be stiving it sure trick. Eat must now (ry to reason aut why West played the given knowing that West also held the ton
In the alt-directing conven- tion the play of an unusually high card asks you to shift to the higher of the two suits not trump. Therefore in this case West is asking East to chiff to a "spade, which, of course, sets the .contract.
