WILL MILLS REPEAT THIS?

PROBLEM FOR MAXIM: CAN HE KEEP OUT OF HARM'S WAY?

BY PETER DITTON

"My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. This is a fifteen round contest for the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World, between, on my right, Freddie Mills, British. Empire, and World Lightheavyweight Champion, and on my left, the challenger Jocy Maxim of the United States of America."

When this preliminary formula has been dispensed with at Earls Court tonight, 18,500 fight fans will sit up and prepare for what may easily be the fight of the year.

They should not be disappointed. The contest will provide a real contrast in styles. On the one hand, Freddle Mills of the windmill arms threatening to bodily remove from the ring anyone getting in the way of one of his left hooks, and on the other Joey Maxim, a boxer all the way, plling up points right, left and centre by jabbing out repeated straight lefts, and then, skipping lightly away before he can come to too much harm.

If at the end of fifteen rounds both men are still on their feet, then I expect Maxim to havo piled up sufficient points to earn the title. But if the fight does not go the distance and the referee is to be seen remorselessly counting over a figure stretched prong on the canvas, then my guess is, that firure will be Guiseppe An- tonio Bernedinelli, more commonly known to the boyu in the fight game na Joey Maxim.

THE HORSE THAT JUMPED FROM RAGS TO RICHES

By BEN PHLEGAR

London, Jan. 23-A Cinderella borse may bring the Royal Family its first victory in the Grand National Steeplechase in 50 years. The horse is Monaveen, who shot from rags to riches when Princess Elizabeth and her mother, the Queen, bought him last autumn.

Two years ago Monaveen, a nine-year-old brown gelding that looks a little scrawny for a jumper, ran in a claiming race and failed to finish. Now he is the winter book favourite for the big chase at Aintree on March 25.

The only Royal horse ever to win the race was the Prince of Wales' Ambush II in 1900.

Does Football Run

In

Families?

Though Denis and Leslie Compton, of the Arsenal, are the most famous brother clubmates of modern association football in Britain, they are by no means the only examples of the adage that football runs in families. Cardiff City and Doncaster Rovers go one better with three brothers ench on their payrolls, At Ninian Park are the brothers Ron, Bob and Albert Sticfall, while Harry, Fred and Arthur Tomlinson are professional Rovers.

Pairs are more plentiful than is generally realised. Aston Villa hold the record with three at the present moment –Amos and Frank Moss, Jack and Jimmy Harrison and Eddie and Reg Lowe, while Wolves possess two such sets in Alf and Billy Crook and Jimmy and Tommy Dunn.
