Ceylan's High Commissioner to Britain, to inform the world that unless something argent is done about the economic situation in Southeast Asia, this area will lead the rest of the universe Into "a depression of unparalleled depth." Paris, Jan. 20.-The French police today announced the arrest of six men for the theft of £200,000 worth of jewels from the Aga and Begum Khan last August and ordered a nation-wide manhunt for two other men who they think can lead them to the jewels.

problem possESS the weakness of over- simplilleation. Undoubtedly poverty. ignorance and discuse offer breeding grounds for Communism. Not the Communism of the intellect, but its half- brother, the Communism of emotional hotred, disillusionment and despair. It is irrational and blood-thirsty, and curınot effectively be dealt with by force of arme other forms of intimidation. To replace social and economic ill healthy and happy living standards denies emotional Communism of its principal advantages and makes the issue one of intellectualism, or alternatively forces the proponents of Communism into attempting a coup d'etat. Illustrations of this can be found in Russia's Eastern Europe satellites, where neither poverty, nor ignorance or disease were any of the motivating factors in converting those states to Communism. Therefore, in the the task of trying to save Southeast Asia from the blight of Communism, the Western democracies appear to be con- fronted with two neccHsities: to help eradicate social and economic ills, thereby denying emotional Communism its breed- ing ground; and to secure from the governments of those countries assisted, guarantees that they successfully resist any attempts by the Communists to obtain control by means of 11
d'etat. Thoughtful but coup vigorous action along these lines seems to present the best chance of preventing the further. sprend of militant Com- munism in Southeast Asia.
