Navy Finishes Inspection

London, Jan. 15.-Salvage work will begin to- morrow on the British submarine Truculent which sank in the Thames Estuary last Thursday with the loss of 64 lives after colliding with the Swedish motor tanker Divina.

The Royal Navy has finished its work of in- spection.

Divers who went down to the sunken sub- marine found the engine room telegraph on the conning tower showing "Stop Engines." This would indicate that the submarine might have been trying to check her way after sighting the Divina and to avoid the collision.

Achievements At Colombo

Colombo, Conference has ended.

Tund while it is impossible to tell from

the winding-up communique just what decisions, if any were renched, one can be the vortal, sympathetic positive about and understanding spirit which charne terised this historic meeting of top-level British Commonwealth ministers. Mr Spender, the new Australian Minister for External Affairs gave a good clue to the goodwill which prevailed throughout the conference by referring to Mr Hevin's sagacity and advice a charming tribute at a time when, as Mr Spender observed, he could not seriously wish the Foreign Minister well in the coming elections. But the meaning and temper of the con- 'ference was best described by Mr Nehru, who expressed the hope that the parleys had "set an example for such discussions with goodwill and co-operation between men who did not, and need not think alike." And the Indinu Premier under- lined the significance of the conference by observing that while such meetings not solve world problems they do help us to prevent things going completely astray. While the formal communiques have given little. Inkling us to what measure of agreement was reached on the various subjects discussed, they do quite clearly reveal the scope of the talks. The subjects ranged from the political and economic situations (present and possible future) in Indonesia, Malaya, Sinm. Burma, Indo-China and China—a formid- able array of problems. Mere exchange of Ideas in 11 friendly, receptive atmosphere made the Colombo conference is not stretching worth while, but it credulity too far to believe that the parleys produced .cyen more important results. It is true that Mr Nehru polnted out that it was not the function of the conference to give any executive direction or to lay down any, official directions, to the governments represented; neverthe less the tone of all the speeches, which

Here again we echo, in appreciation of the communsense which the sentiments contain, remarks by Mr Spender when he said that while Australia fully supported the United Nations, "at the same time it is my firm bellef that this

for only from free peoples of the world can genuine peace come. The fundamen- tal weakness of the United Nations is that cannot be united: its membership Includes natious whose people are denied rights and any of the ordinary human freedoms associated with the democracies. And because of this the free peoples of the world, which include those of the British Commonwealth, must rely on their their united own united strength and actions to guarantee, as far as guarantees can be offered in these days, pence for themselves and the rest of the universe. Undoubtedly the Colombo conference has accomplished something in this direction. It has advanced the Commonwealth another big and important step towards of mankind. solidarity in the interests There was no ulterior motive behind the discussions. They simply demonstrated that members of, the British Commun. wealth appreciated that the problems of the world today are indivisible and that the Commonwealth, fit concert with other free and democratic nations Intends to try and find a common solution to them that will be equable and durable.
