POUND THAT WAS DEVALUED THAT WEEK
SAYS PETER DITTON
The pound was not the only thing to be devalued the other week. England's £162,000 team which met Eire in the first of the season's international matches-fortunately not a World Cup Eliminator--- came down to earth with a bang. For the first time on record an English team was beaten on home soil in an international soccer match by a team from outside Britain.
And what a defeat it was. Allowing for the fact that Godwin, the young Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper, brought off three "fluke" saves with his knees and two miraculous ones with his hands, England never seemed like scoring. The Irishmen, on the other hand, while not being able to boast the same glamour in their team were much more direct in their methods and Farrell's goal just-before the end followed one of the best moves of the match.
On this form the England selectors have got plenty of headaches. But do not expect them to make too many changes for the first World Cup eliminator against Wales on October 15. From what I hear they are not likely to panic. And if there are going to be any startling changes, they will most probably be in the forward line.
