Britain's 3-1 Lead In Ryder Cup Foursomes
BURTON, LEES BEAT BEST
US PAIR ON LAST GREEN
Ganton, (Yorkshire), Sept. 16.-Britain gained a lead of throo matches to ono against the United States in the Ryder Cup golf foursomes today, a feat they had never previously achieved in the international series, which was instituted in 1927. Their previous best in the foursomes was a 2-1 load in 1931.
Seven thousand wildly excited speetators,--most of them soaked by torrential afternoon rains-cheered themselves hoarse as Britain's most experienced pair, Richard Burton and Arthur Lees, gained 'n last-green victory over the best American partnership of Sam Snead and Lloyd Mangrum after a great tussle.
The entire crowd swarmed round the last It was deadly silent as Burton, whose green. irons the American captain protested about yesterday, sank a yard putt for a one-hole victory.
