HOW SOFTBALL WAS BORN & GREW By CORNELIUS RYAN New York, May 9--Baseball calls itself and basketball America's national sport claims to have the largest number of fans, but if figures mean anything, it is softball which is the hing of sports in the United 'States.

Officials of the American Softball Association estimate that the game drew 130,000,000 specta- tors in 1943 and at least that many each year since then. More than 5,000,000 persons are active

Neither baseball nor. players, the ASA says. basketball comes close to those totals.

Softball is a variation of baseball, but still is a distinct game in itself. It uses a 12-inch bait instead of the 9-inch baseball, but it isn't soft. The pitcher must throw with an underhand motion. not the sidearm or överhand of baseball, and the basepaths are 60 feet long instead of baseball's 90 feet.

London, May 9-Yorkshire, renowned for their many victories in two days in matches before the war. when they carried everything before them, started their 1949 championship season with a two- day victory over Somerset at Leeds.
