Lesson Hand-N-S vul.

BY WILLIAM E. McKENNEY

FACH month I enjoy going

through "The Bridge World," which is published by A. Moyse Jr. in New York City. It al- ways contains some very inter- eating articles.

Today's hand is taken from ILB article in the December issue by Henry Brandt of Cambridge, Mass. Anyone who employs the ace-showing con- vention in responses to two-blds can gain a lot of knowledge from this hand.

Some of you may not agree that South should open the bidding with two hearts. How over, one of the advantages of the nec-showing responses that it is possible to open this type of hard with a

two-bid.

If your partner bns he will bid that nee, regardless cf the length of the suit and regardless of the quality of any other suit that he holds..

For example, in this hand, if North held the ace of clubs, he would have to bid three clubs. With two aces, the cor- reet response is four no trump.

trick and a half, you bid three no trump. With no ace and less than a trick and a half, you bid two no trump, as North did in this case.

When South bids three dia- monds, North's response of four duronda là núi nude simply to cliamonds. show support for Ife lins good support for hearts. South knows that the bid of four diamonds does not show the ace, because North denied holding any aces when he bid two no trump Therefore the four diamond bid can mean only ONC thing-Partner, have second-round control in diamonds."

South's bid of four hearts

that he i tells his partner afraid of the club losers. Once again, when North bids Ave ----clubs,-he-is-not-showing-either-

tie ace of clubs or a club suit, Ho is showing second-round control in clubs.

South mikes a very nice bid of five diamonds, and at this point North shows support in hearts for the first time wita a five-heart bid, which allows North and South to get into a six-heart contract. It is easily nude, us the only trick the opponents can win is the uce of clubs.
