T is no use blinking the fact that in many countries In the world today women find that comfortable woollen underwear-and nightdresses-are

A

their

A recent show of lingerie in London proved that manufacturers know exactly what to give customers, for woollen camkaicks and sets of vests and knickers were in the finest yarn and were knlited in a lacy stitch which still did not prevent beautiful fitting

Moreover, today the designers are adding lare to their lingerie of fine wool and sometimes threating ribbon through it in a manner which is thoroughly Edwardian. The firm of Pool, Lerrimer and Tabbener are doing some of the best Ungerie of this kind, giving it on elegance which will appeal to the practient minded modern woman.

Another material which ensures warmth is cotton interlock, as most women know. This is used exten- sively by a firm called Wilkinson Woollles who make it up in pyjamas and nightdresses. A good model seen recently was a pair of pyjamas carried out in Cossack style with a little upstanding collar and embroidered yoke in a contrasting colour to the rest of the sult. This was an ideal choice for the traveller. Another was a nightdress infcream with curved embroidered yoke and pale blue trimming, and wide, comfortable sleeves.

Wool is niso being used extensively by designers of houseconts. The firm of Howard, famous for their fine lingerie, make these coats in brushed wool blanket cloth with a wide waist yoke, sleeves eut In one with a shoulder yoke, and a front zip fastener which begins at the smart turn-over collar. One of the most attractive points in this model is the full skirt,

WHERE DO WE GO

FROM HERE?

By JOAN ERSKINE

LONDON,

1040 fashion had a deliciously

Ierary time. Dealers invited us to accommodate our shapes to their caprices; hairdressers persuaded us to adopt the short cut; milliners in- duced us to wear the hat we hoped would never returnDie humble cloche; and shoemakers shod us in high-buttoned boots.

Whether the short hair brought in tire cloche,

Designers gain their inspiration from the styles worn by our fore- bears,

we are told. So, as the short hair is getting shorter every week. and it is reasonable to suppose that when this said state of affairs reaches its limit, we shall be told to grow it again then shall we have wimples or to Marie Stuart caps designed to allow our maltreated locks grow in decent scclusion? One of the greatest drawbacks to a short cut is at it is always a trouble to grow. and seldom looks. attractive in the growing-out stage. But perhaps hairdressers will come to our ald with false switches, curls, and "falls" of hair. (Disadvantage here is the extremely high cost of hair). Or shall we be left to cope with our chopped-off ends as best we can?

The New Look

In 1947 the New Look arrived and gave fashion writers the time of their lives. As 1948 began and Christian Dior's name had become a hougchola word, people were beginning to re- Kard with suspicion rumours of an "Empire Line" and, worse, a "Tube Look"!

Another surprise came when stoles arrived to form part of the general pallern. We graduated from niry
