Hiss Gives Up $20,000 Job As Grand Jury Investigate Red Spy Ring Charges

New York, Dec. 13.-Alger Hiss, adviser to President Roosevelt at the. Yalta_conference, »gave up his US$20,000 a year job as President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace today while a Grand Jury investigated charges that he had aided a Communist spy ring,

Hiss offered his resignation at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Endowment today. The Directors adopted a resolution that no action.be taken on the resignation at this time, except for Hiss to take a threo-month leave of absence. Dr James T. Shotwell was appointed acting President.

Hiss' action in stepping out of the job he took over in 1946 from the late Nicholas Murray Butler was a late development in his dispute, with Whittaker Chambers over. whether Hiss was a Communist while he was employed by the United States State Department.

Chambers resigned last week from his US$30,000

Meanwhile, the Grand Jury placed Representative Richard Nixon under
