"MCKENNEY DUMB-BELLS
ON BRIDGE
Here Is Example Of Good Defence
BY WILLIAM E. MCKENNEY
GREAT player must have two qualifications. First, he must play good bridge. And second, he must be able to handle his partner well. One of the greatest players in the country today is George Rapee. of New York City. He never fails to compliment a partner on a good bid or play, and this pays big dividends.
When he gave me today's hand. ho sald "This is one of the greatest defensive plays I have ever seen." The defensive play was made by Sidney Meyer, of Miami Beach, Fla. Rapee said that although Meyer has never played in tournaments, be has nevertheless picked up the knock of instantaneous, daring decl- slon that marks a fine player.
Rupee opened the nine of spades against the three no trump contract.

Declarer played the ten from dum- my, and the natural play for Meyer was to win the trick with the queen. However, he took a quick count. He knew that declarer had four club tricks, South had bid a dia- mond, and with the queen-ten in his own hand, Meyer felt sure that declarer had four diamond tricks. He probably held the ace of hearts, which made nine tricks.

Frankness Expected At EECC Meeting
Paris, Dec. 12-The Marshall Plan countries, baulked by conflicting plans for trado revival in Western Europe, are expected when they meet here on Saturday to con- fine themselves to submitting a "progress report" and estimates of next year's needs.
