A BOOK THAT

Many a person who has read hun- dreds of printed books, has rarely paid attention

this book of Nature with is earth and water, sky and clouds and sun and stars and moon; birds and beastà and all the sights and sounds and smells.

Strange as it may seem, many n boy and girl growing up in the open country has rend but little from this book, while a good many elty children going occasionally into the country read page after page with eagerness.

In as much as most school books are written for city children and teachers tend to teach only these books, country boys and girls don't learn at school to read much from Nature's book. Vory Icw. teachers anywhere have been educated in appreciation of the things of Nature nl about them constantly.

thought Have you ever psychology of knowing nantes ol similar the persons, and of how psychology of learning the names of things and creatures of Nature? One can't have a very close, warm. friendly feeling! towards a person face to face until one can address him by his name. I'm sure that you and I enjoy the birch tree or the onk more than if I were Just u tree; the oriole or wren more than if it were just a bird; and the rose or delphinium more than if it wer just a Sower. The name suigests personality.

Of course, just to memorise the name would not assure apprecia tion of the personality. Yet know- ing the name is a part of the emotional experience related to the personality. "Hand in hand with her he walks, Face to face with, her be talks." So wrote Whittier of the Barefoot Boy'n friendship with Nature.

Wonderful when the young chlid entoys 'sounds not only of birds but also of winds, thunder; water falling from the clouds, dripping from the roof, rolling over rocks and pebbles; of the whippoorwill, screech owl, peeper, tree frog, buil froni pecially after dark. Although some children gain such apprecia- tions on their own, sucli enjoy- ments are contagious. Nature tends to Influence the chilch to be kind, gentle, and pure. That's how the poels put 34.
