DARK HORSE MAKES GOOD

By LEE SIEW YEE

Penang junior champlon In 1939; Law Telk Hock has won the Settlemont's singles title from the triple crown holder, Ool Teik Hock. So, after nearly a decade, the dark horse of Malayan badminton has officially made good.

The immense prestige which Ool has built up before and after the war has magnified the shock of his defeat, especially since it was at the hands of one who is probably the most under-rated player of note in the country.

A quick glance at the records of:

the two Teik Hocks explains why

Law's victory has been acclaimed CHESS

as "sensational" by less sober had- minton followers.

Ool's record reads: Penang open singles champion 1930, 1940, 1047. Penung

Against all this evidence, Law Tefik Hock can only show n junior Utle. Nothing more.

His defeat of the Malayan cham- pion in three hard sets last Sunday suggests that he is overcoming these drawbacks.

For the intervening seven weeks, the suggestion has been put forward and will be debated by tho Club committee whether or not to hold a Ladder Tournament.

Ladder Tournaments' have never been a success in the past, largely because of the rule requiring op- ponents to turn up on a set date.

With a rung defender being given a week's or fortnight's notice by his challenges, the game to be played

more success may probably be looked the forward to.

With the

It is too late in the day for changes now, but, if any of the chosen players should drop out, the new Penang champion has & strong claim. From the Straits Times.

The suggestion has been put that the dimcult question of qualification for the Club Champlonship be de- cided by Indder challenges, the six or eight players at the top of the ladder when entries for the Club tournaments are finally called being automatically qualified.

A slow but promising start has been made to revive professional boxing in Singapore which had been, until a fortnight ago, on the rocks for almost one year.

Two promotions have so far been held and although the fighters in the main events were those who cannot be said to have their best days still ahead of them, it was encouraging to see a number of new faces.
