CRICKET LEAGUE SEASON OPENS

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1948.

University Surprise Winners

On Saturday

The first Cricket League season since 1940 opened on Saturday with wina for the University, RAF, Reercio and Army, KCC and IRC played to the only draw of the afternoon.

On the whole it was an afternoon of low scores, though li could not be properly called a bowler's day. The Royal Air Force's 167 at King's Park against Royal Navy was the highest innings of the afternoon and was considerably helped along by a con- tribution of 71 from A/c, Bierne.

There were several good bowling performances, the beat being Lieut. II. Stepto's 7for, 19 for Army against the HKCC Optimists in 12.2 overs. In the only Second Di- vision match of the afternoon, Y. Motiwalla of IRC took 7 for 6 against the KCC Junlors.

The big match of the, afternoon was the KCC v. INC encounter at draw Cox's Path that ended in

set 147 rung after KCC had been to win. C. Percy Small and John Barrow had fully to save the day In a stonewall stand agelost time down with as seven wickets were a 100 runs left to get, both Ismail und Madar proving difficult to score off.

In the Cross-Harbour Swimming Race on Saturday, there was, beside the women's championship, another race within a race.
