Also apparently without motive Was the suicide in 1932 of film executive Paul Bern, husband of Jean Harlow. Two months after their marriage, Bern's nude body was found in the dressing room of his rustic home, a bullet in his head and a revolver in his hand.

OLYMPIAD 1948 TS FINE FILM

THE coloured film of the Olymple Games, "XXVth OLYMPIAD, THE GLORY OF SPORT" (showing

at the Queen's and Lee Theatres), will disappoint those who have seen Leni Riefenstahl's technically superb story of the 1938 Games in Berlin,

But she took two years to make her alm. This one has been com- pleted in less than a month. It is two hours 10 minutes

too long and, often, painstaking.

In reporting the rowing events at Henley the. producer, Castleton Knight, is superb. There is a long shot of the course that is breath- takingly lovely.

And the camera's view of the shells and crews cutting through the still blue waters of the Thames is beautiful.

odd

The film redeems itself for long. uninspired reports of the athletics and the swimming events by shota of competitors, in their off moments (a French girl praying for victory in the discus event, a Swede triumphantly smug over winning the hammer-throw, a couple of cyclists fighting after a spill).

The climax, concentrated on the Marathon, is excitingly followed

from start to finish, successive shots of a Korean in agony as his feet be- gin to blister, a runner stagger: Ing home near to collapse, a 'con- Adent Argentine in the lend--and, best of all, the hunched little nguro of Richards, the Englishmen, get- ting there in the end by dogged, good-humoured effort.

I give you Richards, in fact, as a symbol of his country. It will Warm your hoort to see him com- plete hla weary, arduous task.

The overwhelming American vic- tories in the Games are given their due emphasis. This, I feel, will be one British film which will not be boycotted by the Sons of Liberty when it is shown in the United States
