What do you think of The Self-Demand Method For Your Child?

A FAD known as the solf- demand method of feeding been spreading. infants has According to this method the Infant is to decide when he shall be fed and announce his decl- alon and the mother is to abide promptly by this decision.
The arguments advanced in favour of this method are that infants differ widely in their capacity for taking food and time for digesting and assimi- lating it: that by not letting an infant cry, the mother gives him assurance of affection and security; and that the young mother is saved from need-
less emotional strain of making the infant wait and cry it out.

LOWER PART

By Herman ́N. Bundesen, M.D.
THERE are many, many
causes of pain in the lower part of the back. Thus, the patient who goes to the doctor complaining of backacho con- not expect a quick and definite answer as to the cause of his trouble.
It is reassuring to know, however, that in about 30 out of 100 patients the condition causing the backache is not serious. In the other 10 per- cent the backache may be a sign of some major ailment and the condition should be carefully studled.

Among the more common causes of backache ore inflammation of the muscles of the lower part of the back of certain of the joints of the spine. It may also be produced by sacroiliac strain. The sacroiliac joint is located between the lower part of the spine and the hip bones. Many cases of backache are not due to trouble with the back spine itself but to disorders within the abdomen. Kidney disorders are cometimes responsible for
back pain, but not as often as many peo ple think. Inflammation of the tubes or ovaries in women, on the hand, are more ofton

In cases of inflammation of the tissues, rest and the application of heat and massage may be all that are required. Sometimes a special Brace may be needed to give sup- port to the muscles of the back

While an occasional mother has fretted foolishly over holding always right to the minute, most have wobbled woefully, let- ting the baby cry for longer and longer periods but finally giving in. Any mother who is going to do that had better embrace the self-demand method,

People who have repeated back- ache or backache which lasts for long time should, of course, consult a physician for thorough study, X- rays of the spine sometimes help to disclose the location of the trouble.
Remember, however, that it is not always cosy to-find the cause. It may require several weeks of exa- mination on the part of the phyl- clan before he can put his finger on the responsible disorder, but once it is found, in most instances, the trouble con be completely relieved.
