Quake Ruins One Who Hopes To Act

Japan's Silk Export Programme

Tokyo, June 430,-Japan's silk rayon' export programme haa boon wrecked by the earthquake which devastated the silk town of Fukui on the Mon- southwestern coast on day night.

Mr. Kotaro Nagal Director. General of the Board of Trade told the House of Councillors, Commerce Commitico today that the quako had been a disaster for the rayon and staple fibre industries.

The damage is estimated at eight thousand million yen (about 24

million). Millions of yards of silk - and rayon in stockpiles were des- troyed and probably no high as 20 per cent of Japan's spinning and weaving machines.

TOTAL LOSS

Mr Nagai said that Fukul accounted for about a third, of Japan's, silk rayon and staple Abre production. The refining facilities concentrated at Fukul had suffered a total loss, he said.

- Ho sald the rehabilitation Japan's production of silk and staple fibres had suffered "shocking setback,” As a result of the quake, tho silk and rayon fabrics export plan amounting to 00 million yen (£330,000) was practically wrecked, he added.

Omelal Japanese police reports of the disaster issued today gave the latest casualty figures at more than 13,000, including 4,000 dead.

pre-

From Fukui City, reporta from rellable Australian observers dicted that the death roll will mount steadily да the debris is cleared.

!

In an interview with Router's correspondent, the Governor

of

Fukui prefecture. Mr Obnta, sald that the deaths in Fukui

alono would probably

reach

5,000, and, according to the cor respondent, this figure is probably noi exaggerated as throughout the whole of the earthquake area towns and villages for mile upon mile had been utterly destroyed."

ORDERLY REFUGEES

Fukul County, with 10,000 homes destroyed, suffered the heaviest disaster, but the province of Sakal lost 15,000 homes.

Reller

traing equipped with American medical supplies, food and blankets have been railheading the outskirts of the quake area ali last night, and again today, Jeeps and trucks carried thousands of pounds weight of urgently needed goods into the area for distribution to the refugees.

Complete orderliness among the refugees was a surprising aspect of the disaster, Reuter's correspondent reported. Nowhere In Fuku! or Ishikawa Prefectures have there been uny reports of looting or organised crime.

Most reports indicated that the situation Was well Ja hand, although it probably would be many weeks before full casualty lists were
