YESTERDAY IN THE WORLD OF SPORT:
Wightman Cup Thrill As Todd & Hart Lose
Wimbledon, June 11.-Great Britain won its first match in the Wightman Cup competition. since 1939 today when the doubles team of Mrs. Jean Bostock and Mrs. Molly Blair beat the Ame- rican combination of Mrs. Pat Todd and Miss Doris Hart 6-3, 6-4 before an overjoyed 'crowd of 3,500 in the arena of the All-England Tennis club.
The victory ended the longest string of defeats in the Wightman Cup history since Britain had been shut out seven to nil at Wimbledon in 1946 and at Forest Hills in 1947 and lost both singles matches of the two-day com- petition today.
Curvaceous Mrs Bostock, prettiest of the players, hit- ting the ball harder than at any time in her career sparked an upset doubles win after her surprisingly strong stand against the American and Wimbledon singles champion Mra Margaret Osborne Dupont, of Wilmington, Delaware, who beat her by 6-4 and 8-6.
In the other singles match, Miss Brough slowed down Britain's bouncing Betty Hilton for a classle beating of 6-1, 6-1 in just over half an hour of text book tennis. Miss Brough lost both through her own errors and as far as comparisons went she might just well have breezed through to lavo victory.

Such speeds with safety were forecast by experts. Supersonle research is one of the most secret programmes und few rocket experts would comment lest they break flie rules of national security,
However, at least two said that the cracking of supersonic wall by the XS-1 might well mean man can atart in the greatest adventure of history shooting himself out into spoco.
