Washington, May 23.-The provincial government of Israel to- day announced that its forces would cease fire on all fronts in Palestine Monday (tomorrow) night in complianco with the United Nations Security Council demand.
The United States Vice-Consul in Jerusalem, Mr William Burdett, cabled the State Department that the order would be effected at 8 p.m. Palestine time Monday,
(This presumably refers to Tel-Aviv time, which would mean 4 p.m. GMT Monday or one hour before the Council's 36-hour deadline. Tel-Aviv went on Double Summer Time last night.)
If the Arabs coase fire carlier, the Jews will do likewise, according to the Israel announcement, which added, that if the Arabs defied the Council' the Jews must resumo action,
Record May Temperature Twice Passed In 48 Hours
The record maximum tem- perature for any day in May has! twice been broken In Hongkong| during the weekend.

Mr Burdett acted for the United States in place of Mr Thomas Was- son, who died in Jerusalem from a wound caused by a sniper's bullet.
PALESTINE SITUATION.

Washington, May 23-British and Chinese bids for an early Japanese peace conference made this week by top spokesmen for those two countries aroused no. enthusiasm in United States, official circles.
