JEWS SEALED OFF IN
OLD CITY OF JERUSALEM
Surrender Awaited
London, May 20.—Arab Legionnaires said-in Jerusalem tonight that unless the estimated 500 Jews holding out with their backs to the wall in the Jewish quarter of the Old City surrender within the next 24 hours, the area will be smashed to rubble by Legion mortars and field guns.
This statement from Arab Legion sources followed a forecast of "important developments" by the Arab military commander directing the con- tinuing battle in the Old City. New York reports, quoting Jerusalem despatches, said the Arabs expected the Jewish quarter of the Old City to fall in a matter of hours.
Egyptian forces, meanwhile, 'advancing through the southern Palestine desert, have occupied the strate tic inland Arab town of Beersheba, 45 miles from Jerusalem, and are driving further along the coast to- wards Tel-Aviv, Israel's capital.
