Denis Compton And Edrich In Record Third Wicket Stand
Fishlock Hits Up 253 Against Leicester
London, May 19.--Denis Compton, scoring 252 not out for Middlesex against Somerset at Lords today, made the highest score of his career and helped Bill Edrich, 168 not out, in an English third wicket record of 424 unfinished.
Compton's previous best was 246, for the champion county against The Rest,, at the Oval last season. The previous third wicket record in English cricket was 375, by J. W. Hearne (232) and E. Hendren (175 not out), for Middlesex against Hampshire at Southampton in 1923, but Stan McCable and Willlam Ponsford added 389 for the Aus- tralians against the MCC at Lords in 1934.
Compton and Edrich themselves figured in third wicket partnership of 370 for England against South Africa in the second Test at Lords last year.
They "slaughtered" the Somerset bowling today when adding the last 209 in 70 minutes, Compton claiming 139 of them. The whole stand lasted four hours. HITS UP 253
