Battle For Jerusalem
CITY ENCIRCLED BY ARABS
(By Sam Souki)
With Arab Logion Attacking Jerusalem, May 19.—Troops of the crack Arab Legion captured Jerusalem's northern suburb of Sheikh Jarrah and burst in force into the old walled city area in hand to hand fighting.
As I write this dispatch on a ridge overlooking Sheikh Jarrah, Richard Wyndham, correspondent for the British Kemsley newspapers, has just fallen nearby, killed by a burst of Jewish machinegun fire,
The Legionnaires opened a two-pronged attack at 4 a.m. from the Mount of Olives on the eastern side of Jerusalem and above the Sheikh Jarrah section on the northern side. Shortly before 10.30 a.m., steel-helmeted Ligionnaires, attack. ing from the Mount of Olives, broke into the old city.

OFFICIAL REPLY TO STALIN
4
Detailed Point By Point Statement
Washington, May 19,--The United States today issued a point-by-point reply to Marshal Stalin on the 11 issues which he said he thought should be made the subject of renewed negotiations in his reply to Mr Henry Wallace.
The reply blamed Moscow for the present dead lock and reiterated, in effect, the demand already made by Mr George Marshall, the Secretary of State, that the next move in breaking the deadlock should come from Soviet Russia.
It also repented the American view that the various problems to which both M. Malolov and Marshal Stalla had referred are already in the hands of various international organisations and deliberative bodies and can best be negotiated there rather than at a bilateral United States-Russlau conference...
Here is how the State Department officials replied to each of Marshal Stalin's polls:
(1)-Reduction
of Armaments: Since 1948, this has been and still is under consideration in the com- mission for conventional armaments of the United Nations Security
Council.
ATOMIC ENERGY
(2) Atomic Energy: The officials blamed the Soviet Union, Poland and the Ukraine for blocking effec- five agreement on the international control of atomic energy.
"The United Nations is still confronted with the problem of the international control of atomic energy.
