Locusts Assail

: Crops

Paris, Aug. 11-Villages in the hamlet of Bastudette, Southern France, fought a night-long battle last night with the aid of floodlights and bonfires to save thoir crops from an invasion of locusts.

The "battle" began at dusk as the people of the village assembled with saucepans, klaxons and whistles and anything that, would make a noise to scare away the pests, which dived and blanketed the crops.

"We must have killed 2,000 of them, but there still seemed to be morc than ever. In one night, these pests devoured most of what has taken us a year to grow", one villager said. -Reuter.
