Phillips-Clayton For Liverpool
Johnny Best, of Liverpool, one of British oldest and best-liked the boxing promoters, went to London last week-end and took away with him the signature of Al Phillips (Aldgate) on contracts for a contest with Ronnie Clayton (Blackpool) for the vacant feather-weight champlon- ship.
Present plans are for Best to stage the 1ght on Anheld Road football ground, Liverpool, towards the end of September.
The reference is to Wing-Com- mander Donald Orsborne Finlay, of the Royal Air Force, whò, at 40 years of age, finished a close second In the 120 Yards High Hurdles to Belgium's Pol Brickman. For ཐ

week remarkable performance. A enriter, the evergreen Finlay had taken the RAF hurdles title in 14.0 seconda, a performance that
puts. him in Olympic class.

It is true enough that some American hurdles have done 14.0 seconds and better this season, but Fiuldy's performance is the year's best for a non-American. It was accomplished at an 'age double that of the average of America's best timber-toppers, and at the White City Stadium where hurdling times have never been too good,

Ho has no bring longer the speed that could him to the tape ahead of America's crack trio of Harrison Dillard, Bill Porter and Tom Mitchell. He has a style, however, that is the nearest thing to inwless that any hurdler other than Fred Wolcott or Forrest Towns has ever produced..
STYLE IS THE SECRET
Wolcott was a 0.5, sprinter. Towns never beat 10 flat for 100 yards, Finlay has not even approached that. It is sheer style that carries him over the limbers.
Fifteen years ago.at Los Angeles, first Finlay placed third in his
Olympic "final. He was some seven years ahead of his peak and toed the starting line against one of the finest trio of collegiate hurdlers the United States had ever produced.
