VICHY, Aug. 27 (UP).-M. Pierro Laval, former Premier of France, and a pro-German, was attacked to-day by a Communist during a coro- mony for the mobilisation of anti-Communist volunteers at Borgnis des Bordes barracks, Ver- sailles, shot in the arm and liver and seriously wounded. M. Marcel Deat, editor of the German- controlled Prris daily "L'Ocuvre" was also wound- ed.
Laval, with other prominent Frenchmen arrived at Versailles at 5 p.m. to attend the formal raising of the French colours over the barracks.
During the ceremony, two terrorists approached and shot at Laval from a few yards. One assailant, identi- fied as Paul Colette, a communist, was taken to prison after being nearly lynched by bystanders.
The official party removed the wounded Laval to hospital. This marked the first terrorist attack since the Shaumburg manifesto was issued threatening to shoot hostages for attacks on Germans, Laval has received numerous threatening letters since the start of the Russian war.
