The Story So Far:
Seemingly normal, Intelligent and attractive Philip Monrell has married Stella Bergen, a beautiful refugee who has been a companion to his mother. They are happy but the erratic, morbid side of Philip's nature develops more and more. He secretly kills Stelle's pet kitten because his friend, Ward Androws, has given it to her. He becomes, obscssed by the notion that she and Ward are in love. As head of a steel works he antagonizes the men and almost causes a riot. Then, one day, nearly crazed, he tries to push Ward into a steel furnace. That night, Ward confronts him with it. They quarrel and Ward leaves to go to London, Philip has won but at the same time he feels that he has really lost-Stella.
"Not that I'm expecting burglars," said Philip. "But you never know. haven't they?”

When the servants were all gone he went into the library and tried out his device. He placed a hunt- ing knife between the door that led to the hall and the door post. The Solicitor General faced the Jury. "Gentlemen, you have only to ask yourselves one question. Did Ward Andrews kill Philip Monrell? If the answer 10 that question is 'Yes' then you are bound to return against the pri- soner the verdiet of GUILTY OF WILFUL MURDER.”
FIOR LONG MOMENTS, Stella sat there with her hend burled in her hands. She dared not look up when the jury filed bark, when the foreman rose.
