Around The Variations In Scoring Especially Applicable To And Four-ball Games

Cricket "Atmosphere"

SOME LITTLe while baCK this column was devoted to rules and conditions of play in three and four- ball matches. These games are generally the most played, especially on nine-hole courses where there is most likely to be congestion, and because of this it has been suggested that some information on the various methods of scoring would be of interest.

Commonest of all is the "hole

LONDON, Aug. 12 (Reu- ter). Lord Roseberry's Ptolemy, which is considered to have a good outsidor's chance in the St Leger, will have a stiff kost when it participates in the historic "Silver Bell," one of Eng- land's oldest turf events, at Lanark next Saturday.

The "Silver Bell" is said to have been started by William the Lion of Scotland over 70 years ago, and it has been included in all the Lanark The European Y.M.C.A. Swimming programmes ever since. For three-balls, the best system I've yet come acrota is the "splitting of sixes". By this is meant that for ench hole there are six points-four

The six points could still be played for on a 3, 2 and 1 basis, but it would involve fractions; for in stance, a hole halved would mean 24 each for the players, and a half for second place would garner 11⁄2 points. On the 4-2-0 busis fractions are avoided.
