Byrd Sees Base In Antarctic Possible If Panama Is Lost
Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Antarctic hero, believes that in event of destruction of the Panama Canal the United States might be forced to establish at
least part-time naval and air bases in the Antarctic.
As commanding officer of the United States. Antarctic_Ser- vice, which has just terminated an expedition to South Polar areas, Admiral Byrd told a House Appropriations Sub-Com- mittee in Washington that under such circumstances, Antarctica. had positive strategic value to the United States, apparently to help maintain communications between the Atlantic and Pacific.
