Dragon Festival

Boat Race:

The Chinese "Dragon" Festival, which fails on Friday, the 5th day of the 3th Moon, will be celebrated' In Hongkong by the Chinese community in time-honoured fashion by com- petitive races with "dragon" boats. The meetings will be conducted by the Chung Sing Benevolent Society from their bathing shed in Kennedy

Town.

Five dragon boats, representing Kowloon, Shoukiwan Aberdeen, Cheung Chau and Wanchal, woi participate, and the first race is scheduled to start at 3 pan. sharp, Four or five evenis. will be held over distances from 200 to 800 yards.

The dragon boat is about 60 feet long, and manned by a crew of 80; who sit abreast in rows of two.

They are provided with paddles about four feet in length with thin, brond blades. The cox sits at the nothing stern but does comparatively more than steer the, course. A big -wooden drum is placed at the bow and the oarsmen dip their paddles Into the water to the stroke” of the drummer.. A gong is also struck in unison with the drum.

uran A huge banner with the name of the competitor is flown at the bow, while amidships and at the stern smaller fings are holsted.

The annual boat race attracts hundreds of the floating population, who line their craft up almost along the whole

whole length of the course. As tho boats are raced past them, long string of fire crackers are let off... It is a supersutious belief that good luck attends he who gets splashed by water from a racing dragon Excel-

bont.
