Sir Robert Vansittart Retiring
LONDON, May 21 (Reuler). -Sir Robert Vansittart having expressed a desire to retire from his appointment as Chief Dip- lomatic Adviser to the Govern- ment on reaching the age of GO in June next, the Secretary, of State for Foreign Affairs has reluctantly agreed to accept his resignation, but it is announced that the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State will continue to enjoy the benefit of Sir Robert's advice when the occasions, arise.
A Barony of the United Kingdom will be conferred on Sir Robert in the forthcoming birthday honours

French Merchant Navy Adopts Nazi Technique
LONDON, May 21, (Router)-Following the Nazi example, Vichy has adopted the policy of "scuttling" ships. The French Ministry of Marine at Vichy has ordered captains of all French merchant ships to sabotage or Immobilise their ships if such a course is necessary to avoid capture by the British authorities.

Union Spokesman Tells Of Methods of Arrest
The Hawkers' Union gave a tea party to the Chinese Press yesterday at the St Francla Hotel, when a spokesman of the Union said that arrested often many hawkers were on various charges regardless of whether or not they had licences. Sometimes, he said, the goods were damaged, and he hoped that those arrested would not be beaten pending henring of their cazes.
There are about 20,000 hawkers in Hongkong, it was stated, having as dependents from 40,000 to 50,000 persons.
CYCLIST FOR
66 YEARS
MOST famous of pioneer cyclists, George Lacy Hilller, who has died, aged 84, was also "father" of the Stock Exchange.. He started cycling in 1874, and started business on his own account at the Stock Exchange alx`years later. From that time until about a year ago he rarely used any other vehicle but a bleycle to travel between his home at Streatham, S.W, and the City.
He won all four bicycle champion- ships promoted by the National Cyclists' Union in 1881.
Mr Hilller was - secretary of the London County Athletic Club, owners of the Herne Hill track. He promote ed the three 24-hour, races for the Cuca Cup in 1892-3-4;, whichi; drew crowds of over 25,000.
