Peruvian Destroyers Chase LIMA, Apr.

WASHINGTON, Apr..1 (UP)-1 is reliably stated that Germany and Italy have demanded the prompt re- lease of the seized merchant ships and crews. It is understood that the protests are identical in terms and contend that there is no busis in in- ternational law for protective cus- tody, while they know of no United States law which would authorise such action.

Meanwhlic, official circles are in- creasingly Inclined to believe the seizures will preclude the requisition- ing of the ships for use in the United States merchant marine.

There is every indication that the United States will ignore the

protests and proceed with action against the crews.

Mr Cordell Hull, Secretary of State suid he had not studied the matter carefully enough to determine whether or not, the protesta even needed a reply. He added that the protests would not be published for the present. He asserted that Italy had not repiled to the United States request to close the Italian vice- consulates at Newark, NJ., and De troit, and he declined to discuss the possibility of further action.
