There has been a rather big increase in serious crime and petty larcenics in 1940, compared with 1939, it was learned from the Hon. Mr C. G. Perdue, Acting Commissioner of Police, on Saturday.
Mr Perdue stated that in 1940 the number of serious crimes was 16218 s against 11,504 in 1939. The nam ber of petty larcenies had also gone up considerably, but there had been, a reduction in the number of out- rages or offences against persons with violence.
One of the reasons for the increase in petty lareenles, sald Mr Perdues was undoubtedly the increase in the population; another was that when the refugees first came to the Colony

It is possible that something de-, finitely more Important than a trade treaty is being prepared in Moscow, and some would not be surprised if pact "bombshell" is on the way. But for the reasons already stated,
it is not felt that the Japanese will rakan Anglo-American war in the absence of a major crists in the Eng- ish Channel even if Hitler produces 50 pets bearing Stalin's and offers to underwrile the whole signature bunch which development is quite! possible within a month,
