The confidence which Royal Air Force pilots place in their. ground staffs is eloquent testimony to the quality of the men who day in and day out, keep the machines at the peak of efficiency. Preparations for a flight are so elaborate, so manifold and smooth co-ordination-of-all-the-parties-involved and, when the plane returns, at least as much work is required to effect its over- haul and to do any necessary repairs. This is where the En- gineer-officer, or the "Plane Doctor," gets busy.

Besides being "coroner" for inquests on Nazi machines, hel is consulting physician and general practitioner for British air- craft, If a machine has lost speed he takes it into the air and finds the reason why, and even if no trouble has been reported, he tests and tries out every working part of the aircraft. If he finds anything wrong he prescribes the remedy and his expert advice is as essential in discovering defects in British aircraft as it is in discovering how a German aircraft crashed.

A raid on Germany which has been pressed home in spite of intensive barrage-fire and machine guns puts a strain not only on the bomber's crew, but also on the machine itself, and before it takes the air again it undergoes a thorough check-over. It is these examinations and checking which gives British airmen that feeling of confidence not possessed by their rivals. Case Grant's

REGULATION OF WEIGHT

PEAKING of water balance (see last week's article) I am reminded of many experiments carried on over a long period, several years ago, by Dr L. H. Newburgh of Ann Arbour, Mich. Ile considered that his experiments had taught him much concerning obesity, He tried out his theories on both fat and lean. He kept reducing patients on a diet so much below the suggested metabolism requirements that they should have fallen off to skeletons.

One of the present war's ally. The problem becomes one for of the crash, and the pilot is able to take the air again almost immediately. Nothing is overlooked and in PICTURE (1) a Wellington bomber is shown undergoing a thorough overhaul.

Immediately fighters fresh from a dog-fight come down from the sky, the armourers run to the machines, re-fuel, scrutinise the guns and strip them of empty or half empty belts and re-arm the guns. Replacements are made at once, and the aircraft are ready to go up again within a few minutes.
