Jockey Club Looks To The

New Long Distance Handicaps For

L

1941 Extra Race Meetings

IT APPEARS that the motto of the Hongkong Jockey Club is: "Bettor class ponies; Better class races." Looking ahead seems to be their sole aim, for (according to the 1941 race fixtures just to hand) the Stewards have inaugurated a few new middle and long distance classic handicap events confined to all Australian ponics to be contested at the Extra Race Meetings during the current racing season.

LAST YEAR'S RESPONSE

It will be recalled that last year the Brisbane Spring Handicap for Australian ponies was lengthened from one and a quarter miles to two miles, and the response with a field of ten runners has no doubt prompted the racing Stewards for more long-distance races.

CLERK of the Weather was not too kind last Satur day morning, but the jockeys and trainers had to exercise their ponies and there were several fast gallops over the Derby course in preparation for the big meeting.

The best among the Austra- lian. subscription ponies WIN done by Araxy II who came out of the trial with flying colours.

Accompanied by Catterick Bridge. The pair jumped off with 32 seconds for the first quarter and the first mile was

run in 2.06. I expected Araxy II would crack up after a first mile, but the progeny of Sum King went on cheerfully and he took a minute and three-fifths of a second to run the last half mile, covering the whole distance of 15% miles in 3.00.1%.
